"The Mustache That Walks Like a Man" is a non-fiction, first
person memoir that relates the experiences Monty had as a U.S. Marine Corps battalion
surgeon assigned to the First Division on the front line of the Korean War.
His book carries
the reader through the rice paddies and bunkers of the war where sometimes the only relief
from the anguish of battle was a quiet retreat to his childhood in the mountains of rural
Vermont, and the tales he told his corpsmen of his days in general practice in the Green
Mountain State.
His fascinating,
first-hand accounts of battle and the life of a surgeon on the front line are accompanied
by numerous personal photographs. His stories of childhood and general practice are filled
with humor, warmth and a love for life, providing a meaningful contrast to the waste of
war.
In writing this
book, Monty has either omitted or explained the medical terminology so that everyone can
enjoy it equally.
During the Korean War, Monty was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with
combat "V" (valor) and the commendation medal with combat "V", among
others.
